We’re Here, We’re Queer, We’re Also Mormon

Steven Fales was the perfect Mormon, with a six-generation religious lineage, Eagle Scout honors, a BYU degree — that is, until he came out as gay, got excommunicated, moved to New York, and became a methhead manwhore. The award-winning playwright chronicled his transformation in a one-man show, Confessions of a Mormon Boy, which premiered in 2001 and ran to rave reviews in New York. Now he’s clean, still gay, and Mormon again and directing and starring in a whole trilogy about Mormon high jinks at Rising Action Theatre (1480 SW Ninth Ave., Fort Lauderdale). Confessions is the first part; the second, Missionary Position, takes you on a campy journey through the secret initiation rites and creepy upper circles of the Mormon Church, where there’s apparently some stripping off of the magic underpants. (Rising Action warns that Missionary Position sports full frontals.) Part three, the premiere of Who’s Your Daddy, sees our protagonist, Mormon Boy, trying to track down his long-lost Greek grandfather. You’ve got three weeks to catch this trilogy before it heads to off-Broadway.
