"Arthur" a Remake Without the Pleasures From the Original

In this rethink of the 1981 screwball throwback, the titular drunken heir, originally played by lovable lump Dudley Moore, has been rebuilt to suit slinky British sleaze-comedian Russell Brand, whose constant nattering rarely transcends throat-clearing improv. Still supposedly a debauchee, Brand's Arthur cruises Manhattan in too-tight schoolboy suits and fawns over Naomi (Greta Gerwig), a wide-eyed tour guide who wears rompers and longs to write books for kids, while John Gielgud and Geraldine Fitzgerald's parental surrogates have been conflated into a single nanny (Helen Mirren), still hanging around the 30-something Arthur's nursery. Where Moore's Arthur found his establishment-defying soulmate in wacky poor girl Liza Minnelli, the new film attempts to romanticize Arthur and Naomi's shared childlike naïveté and chaste affection; the billionaire's business-minded arranged bride, on the other hand, is sexually aggressive to the point of debasing the actress who plays her (Jennifer Garner). Maybe the 1981 film isn't exactly a sacred cow, but from the temperance subplot that replaces the original's unrepentant celebration of Arthur's obliteration to the shitty up-tempo cover of Christopher Cross' karaoke classic "Arthur's Theme," this remake seems to exist only to zap the original of its minor pleasures.

On one hand, it is refreshing to see some upscale prose. On the other hand, you can still write a comprehensive and well thought-out review without using 100 dollar words three times in each sentence (yes, it's sarcasm, but you get the point). Even lawyers understand the concept: Simpler is better. Are you studying for the SAT's by chance? Based on how you wrote the review, I would imagine you wouldn't even consider debasing yourself to respond to this comment...

And I thought Gilbert Gottfried's voice was annoying.... Russell Brand is a close second. When is Hollywood going to stop with re-makes and make original stuff again. Have they forgotten that there are still good books being written and have forgotten how to turn them into good movies?

I wouldn't pay to see Russell Brand in any situation. I find him extremely irritating as he tries too hard to make everybody laugh & love him, which is the exact opposit of what Dudley Moore did. He had natural talent, something that Brand will never have.

Well Russel Brand is the most annoying and awful actor out there. Way to overrated.

Do you people ever review a movie that's good? Or do you just write reviews to shit on movies?

the answer is a resounding YES! the remake mill has produced some terrible movies that no one really wants to see. Fortunately movies like Inception, King's Speech make it through each year and actually entertain us.

Russell Brand has clawed his was to B celeb status by dating all the half baked British actresses and models. He is a sill obnoxious waster...but there again so half most of his contempararies. Don't like him, never will.
