Take Your 4-20 Celebration Into Deep Space Dead

Indeed, as the old axiom goes, “There is nothing like a Grateful Dead concert.” There are lots of recordings of those special nights when Garcia and company channeled the mysterious cosmos of the Grateful Dead experience to the swirling delight of the colorful, crowd portion — the Deadheads. For the born-too-late and still-truckin’ Deadheads, one of the most beloved documents from the Dead’s long, strange trip is The Grateful Dead Movie, which will be screened Wednesday. Several theaters in the bicounty area will join more than 500 theaters nationwide, making it the first widely distributed theatrical screening since 1977. It will feature never-before-seen interviews with Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir.

Filmed in 1974, which is widely considered to be a peak time for the band, the film shows the Dead playing at its best, though it doesn’t focus solely on the music. The film, which was codirected by Garcia, takes a more holistic approach — weaving together audience footage, interviews with the band, and psychedelic animation. The result is far more than a concert film. Rather, it provides a multidimensional experience of the rare and beautiful phenomenon that was, and is, the Grateful Dead. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Call 954-777-3456, or visit fathomevents.com for participating theaters — or head to Regal Cinemas Cypress Creek Station 16 (6415 N. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale; 954-771-0033).
