A Place Based With Artistic Purpose

The Bubble has really outdone itself for its second birthday. Back two years ago, when this new venue popped up, for most it was a place like no other. In Fort Lauderdale, the bar scene had been the indie art scene — it was typical to see a place transform, for one night, into an “art show.” But bars could never fully hide their true nature — what festered inside those walls was drinking hooligans. But in April 2009, from tons of artistic chewing, the Bubble emerged, thanks to Garo Gallo and Yvonne Colon, and what has been breathing inside those walls ever since is art. And there are also alcoholic beverages — think keg and sangria — because the folks who run this venue also care about their clientele. Sure, there’s no Maker’s Mark or craft beer on tap — but overflowing artistic thought pours from the high-ceilinged room (warehouse) and the stage out back, covered in stars.

"The Anniversary" is going to be a monster of a show, featuring 11 musical acts: Alexander, Dooms de Pop, Pretty Please, Radar vs. Wolf, Low Visibility, Raffa Jo of Raffa & Rainer, Rob Elba of the Holy Terrors and Hearing Damage, Travalonia, Brady Newbill, Black Weather Shaman, and Loxahatchee Sinners Union. There will be more than 31 artists and vendors, including Bubble staples Sean Murdock, Blair Hess, and Rachel DeJohn; some vending by the Hemp Butterfly, Cupcakes in the Lobby, and Funk You & Edau. There will be a Fun Booth, conducted by Penelope Lane Photography, as well as photo exhibitions by Derrick Turner (the man you’ve seen behind the camera at many Bubble events) and Sue Buzzi, among others. Frank McGuffin, formerly half of the food-truck sensation Munchie One, will be present — truckless — but still cooking up some of his delicious munchies. To boot, Digital Love DJs Mig & Andy Sweetswirl will be playing records. The anniversary costs $10, including beverages, and runs from 5 p.m. to midnight at the Bubble (810 NE Fourth Ave., Fort Lauderdale). Call 954-562-3804.
Sat., April 30, 5 p.m., 2011
