More About

The social-networking generation has arrived. There are Facebook pages for everything from multinational conglomerate megacorporations to the coffee shop on your corner. There are Twitter feeds for celebrities, nobodies, and escaped snakes. The social networking generation wants to know what is going on (now!); then there at the venue, they want to check in, take a pic of what’s there, and share their opinion about it, so several hundred of their closest friends can “Like” it. The foolish attempt to fight this share-happy, microblogging tsunami wave of impersonal intimacy — the wise embrace it. The Museum of Art|Fort Lauderdale (1 E. Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale) is among the wise. It is not only allowing patrons to photograph its latest exhibit, “Sight Specific: Explorations in Space, Vision and Sound”; it’s also encouraging them to Facebook, tweet, and visit the artists’ sites to share their opinions. The nine installations, created by local artists, are themselves comments on the Edward Larrabee Barnes design of the museum’s very structure, the artists’ immediate reactions to the building itself. The foray into social networking is part of the MOAFL’s ongoing mission to reach out to the wider community (virtual and actual) and become an integral part of the local cultural scene. “Sight Specific” will be on display through September 4. Visit moafl.org, or call 954-525-5500.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: May 1. Continues through Sept. 4, 2011
