Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Once upon a time, an unusual German boy named Hansel fell in love with a U.S. soldier. However, East Germany’s Communist shackles kept them apart. In order to flee, the two would have to marry as man and woman, so Hansel underwent surgery and took over his mother Hedwig’s identity. Unfortunately, the surgery didn’t go as planned, and Luther eventually left Hedwig malformed and heartbroken. Now, recovered from the breakup, she went on to assemble a rock band comprised of Korean-born Army wives, and thus Hedwig and the Angry Inch was formed.

In 1998, John Cameron Mitchell birthed this tale and joined forces with Stephen Trask to rock the world with Hedwig and the Angry Inch, the groundbreaking tale of a transgendered rock singer. After being performed all over the world and receiving a series of awards, in 2001, the story made it onto the big screen. Infinite Abyss Productions invites South Florida to take part in the “Hedhead” phenomenon when it brings Hedwig back to life at Empire Stage (1140 N. Flagler Drive, Fort Lauderdale). It opens Thursday and will run for five weeks, promising to be “trantastic.” Tickets cost $30 and are available online or at the door. Visit infinite-abyss.com or empirestage.com.
Thursdays-Saturdays. Starts: May 5. Continues through June 4, 2011
