Daughter of the late, great Texas blues master Johnny Copeland, Shemekia is a strong, convincing belter in the tradition of Koko Taylor and Etta James. Raised in Harlem, she got her start filling in for Johnny during his difficult later years and has won scads of blues-snob polls along the way. At 31, she's the sort of singer well worth checking in on here and down the road.
And a helluva show it was! Shemekia is amazing live and the Bamboo Room is a fabulous intimate venue to see her. She started off with my fav tune --- I'm a Wild Woman and You're a Lucky Man -- but played a lot of her other songs. Also did an a cappella stroll through the audience --- and she has the pipes to carry it off. The crowd loved her ---book her back again! --- she tore the roof off the joint.
