Car Culture

Our newest car models come with built-in GPS, DVD players, automatic parallel parking, and little alarms that wake up sleeping drivers. But for all those gizmos and gadgets, undoubtedly a certain grandeur has been lost in car design since the Buick Y-Job — the world’s first concept car, an art-deco-styled steampunk machine on wheels — or the 1950s’ finned Cadillacs, which derived their aesthetic cues from sharks. Sure, these cars were death-traps in a crash. But they were gorgeous.

If you’re nostalgic for that golden age of the automobile, head to the Seminole Hard Rock & Casino for a “Classic Car Show” spotlighting some 200 vintage rides from the 1940s on, including souped-up special editions. Two entertainers will perform the famous “Who’s on First” Abbott and Costello skit for old time’s sake, and DJ Scott “The Music Man” will spin. Fifty awards are to be handed out for the hottest cars, including five for best in show. You can register your own car by calling 305-214-CARS, or visiting either jumpinjackproductions.com or cruisinsouthflorida.com.

The Classic Car Show is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Seminole Paradise (5804 Seminole Way, Hollywood). Admission is free. Call 954-585-5112, or visit seminolehardrockhollywood.com.
