New Times enjoys a night of experimental noise. Artist/musician Richard Vergez, who will be one of the performers Friday at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, poses a very interesting question: “Why are people so put off by nonmusical noises but can stroke their chins and sip wine to something as unconventional as a Rothko painting?” Yes, all walks of life have accepted abstract and postmodern art, but when it comes to experimental music, we agree with Vergez: “It’s sad to think people haven’t made it further than Radiohead.”

The“Evening of Experimental Music and Performance” is set to accompany the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood’s “Fifth All-Media Juried Biennial” exhibition. Scott Murray, owner and director of Twenty Twenty Projects in Miami, and Michelle Weinberg, artist as well as creative director of the Girls’ Club in Fort Lauderdale, have selected the most artistically appealing 66 works out of 825 entries. Only 40 artists made the cut out of 294. So among the paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, photography, video, computer-generated images, site-specific installations, and performance art, tonight, experimental noise will explode. It is a daring and thrilling move.

What is experimental music? How is it avant-garde? Well, Vergez describes his set as a “live, improvised experiment in the concrete sounds of nonmusical objects and repetitive structures, with some tape accompaniment for mood.” We love mood setters. And there could be some guitar, he says. Besides Vergez, there will be ambient and “acousmatic” music from fsik huvnx, zany avant-pop from Pocket of Lollipops, and deconstructed live drums, electronics, and sampling by Susan Telemetry. The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood (1650 Harrison St., Hollywood) will be filled with the sound of noise from 6 to 9 p.m. It costs $10 if you’re not a member or age 3 or under.
