Tonight, “Respectable Street” Actually Plays at Respectable Street

The “ ’80s Prom” is a well-loved party theme: The exigencies of the ’80s aesthetic (neon, off-the-shoulder blouses, synthesizers) are all hinted at in modern pop culture, but at an ’80s Prom Party, they can explode. All proms are unabashed style showcases anyway, so if the prom is just a themed one, why not go all out? The prom is also assuming the title “Respectable Street’s 5th Ever Cheesy ’80s Prom,” so you can get an idea of what to expect: era-appropriate music you love and hate, classic school-dance photos (in a balloon-covered archway), and lots of spiked punch to ensure that your dance moves are cheesy as well. The best-dressed king and queen will be awarded prizes. We can only guess what they are — drink tickets? Vinyl? Even if you don’t win one, there are few ways to spend Memorial Day more giddily than dancing to Rick Astley and, of course, XTC. Prom is free and runs from 9 p.m to 4 a.m. Sunday at Respectable Street (518 Clematis St., West Palm Beach.) Call 561-832-9999, or visit respectablestreet.com.
Sun., May 29, 9 p.m., 2011
