Out of the Closet, Into the Tropics

Every year, LGBT people in South Florida look forward to June. Besides the fact that June is Pride Month, the auspicious beginning of summer also brings us Out in the Tropics, “a different kind of performing arts festival.” And by different, it means gay, queer, transgendered, bi, and flexible. The festival opens with a free panel discussion and reception at 9 p.m. Thursday at the Shore Club (1901 Collins Ave., Miami Beach). On Friday at 8 p.m., check out recording artist Bitch at the Colony Theater (1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach), whose “mouthy wordplay and virtuous electric violin playing are ferociously hot,” according to the Village Voice. Tickets cost $15 to $20. But it wouldn’t be a truly gay event without events titled “Crotch” and “Cracks.” “Crotch” is a Bessie Award-winning dance performance by Keith Hennessy that takes place at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Colony Theater. Tickets cost $15 to $20. And contrary to what Whitney says, crack isn’t whack — Ridley Scott’s daughter — Jordan Scott — and her WWII-era film, Cracks, set in an all-girl boarding school, will screen at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Coral Gables Arts Cinema (260 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables). Tickets cost $20. The festival runs until June 19, and VIP festival passes cost $100. Call 305-910-7898, or visit fundarte.us.
