He's the Death of the Party

"Anything Is Possible" is an exhibit at Broward College on "manufactured reality" that makes you happy about contemporary art. Three artists take on the theme. Party Pooper, by Andrew Nigon, is a favorite of mine: a headless statue with a balloon on a pole stuck into its neck, sitting on a chair in a bloody seersucker with skinned legs. The title, Party Pooper, is perfect because this grotesque thing looks exactly like the world's most awkward wallflower. ("Hey, who invited the decapitated guy?")

Raul Mendez's ESCHATOMETACOSMOPOLISAPIENSIS #10 (say that ten times fast) is another stunner: A bit ineffable, it's a high aerial view of a mysterious landscape redolent of Florida and utopia. The works, which also include Susan Lee-Chun's three-minute video Let's Suz-ercise!, have a cheekiness and depth about them that contrast refreshingly with the superficial self-seriousness of most contemporary art.

"Anything Is Possible" 's opening reception is at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Broward College Central Campus Fine Arts Gallery (3501 SW Davie Road, Davie). The exhibit runs through September 21. Free admission. Call 954-201-6894, or visit broward.edu/campuslife/finearts.
Mondays-Fridays. Starts: Aug. 25. Continues through Sept. 21, 2011
