Prized Portraiture

The Boca Museum is taking portraits out of storage and showing them off to the public. The collection is topnotch. There’s an original Andy Warhol print (though calling it an original is, admittedly, oxymoronic) of a young Mohammed Ali in red, blue, brown, yellow, and green. In one print, his fist is clenched under his chin. He might be resting his head on it in contemplation or readying it for a punch — there’s a sort of optical illusion at work here. Then there’s a 1968 photo by Arnold Newman taken of the famous painter Georgia O’Keeffe. With her face in profile, she looks almost exactly like Whistler’s mother. There are 50 images of celebrities, politicians, artists, and everyday people freeze-framed in a moment.

“Portraits From the Permanent Collection” at the Boca Museum (501 Plaza Real, Boca Raton) opens Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and runs through May 13, 2012. Admission costs $8 or less. For hours and more info, call 561-392-2500, or visit bocamuseum.org.
Sept. 6-May 13, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., 2011
