Do yourself a favor and spend your Tuesday evenings from 6 to 7:45 p.m. on the sixth floor of the Main Library (100 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale). That is where a volunteer Spanish-speaking teacher leads El Club. Sure, immersion is the best way to learn a new language, but if that alone were sufficient, there would not be a man, woman, or child in the tricounty area who could not have at least a basic conversation in Spanish. How is your Spanish? Osmosis works great for water but not for getting a new language into your skull. Attend the free group, made up of beginner and intermediate speakers. You can practice casual conversation en español without the pressure of a classroom or a real-world situation. To the "This is America; speak English" folks out there: Your stubbornness is not only ignorant; it's self-defeating and will put you at a serious disadvantage as the American ethnic landscape continues to evolve. Our closest neighbors and fastest immigrant group are Spanish-speaking.
