The Closest Thing to a Beer Museum

Did you know that FIU has a beer lab? Yeah. What cool scientists are named B.R.E.W. FIU? The Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management brews craft beers, teaching their students -- yes, educating them -- on exotic beer flavors. They live in a beer world, and we get to live on the same planet Friday for "The Art of Brew" at the Projects Space at FAT Village (519 NW First Ave., Fort Lauderdale). This night is a benefit for the new Young at Art Museum in Davie, which will be headquarters for everything cultural-arts-education-related once it's completed. There will be four permanent galleries, studios to do art stuff in, a library, a theater, a national traveling exhibition gallery, a teen center, a recording studio, a gift shop, a café, classrooms for preschoolers -- a lot.

So let's throw some beer money their way; tickets cost $30. This money is not to just build walls -- it's to go to Young at Art's at-risk youth -- OK, and to build the walls of the teen center, which includes the recording studio. Saturday at "The Art of Brew," attendees will get to learn the process -- and history -- of beer. The beer here is special -- it's being brewed particularly for this event. And it'll also be paired with food from local chefs Slow Food Truck and Taste Buds Catering. There will be more beer, local beer, by Brown Distributing. And with the beer, there will be tons of art and music as well as "An Art Exhibition" silkscreen T-shirt printing. The night runs from 7 to 11 Friday. Visit youngatartmuseum.org.
