Norton Is a Flagship

Starting Thursday, and right in time for the end of the Iraq War, the Norton Museum is paying homage to American pride with an exhibit by contemporary artist Dave Cole. The exhibit features a 15-by-28.5-foot American flag constructed with pieces of the 192 flags that make up the United Nations' "Flags of the World" set. The scraps of these now-shredded flags will be strewn across the floor in an impressive display of color and spirit.

The Norton is hosting several lectures surrounding the topic of flags. Fans can meet Cole in person on opening day for the "Conversation With the Artist and Curator" lecture. Known for his giant installation pieces, including a 16-foot fiberglass teddy bear, Cole purposefully left the Norton's piece open to multiple interpretations in the hope of getting a range of reactions from viewers. The installation will be on display until January 16. Admission is $12 for adults, $5 for visitors ages 13 to 21, and free for museum members and children under 13. A full exhibition schedule and museum hours can be found at norton.org.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: Nov. 3. Continues through Jan. 16, 2011
