'Tis the season of perpetual hope. And giving. And retailers trying desperately to part you from your hard-earned money. It starts Black Friday -- which now seems to span multiple days -- to Cyber Monday -- the entire month of December has become a frantic consumer sprint to the holiday finish line. And then, of course, comes the inevitable return/exchange season. Every year around this time, the Bear and Bird Boutique + Gallery, the artsy upstairs partner of Tate's Comics (4566 N. University Drive, Lauderhill), puts on a special exhibit that invites you to slow down and take in some art but doubles as easy-yet-meaningful shopping. Unlike its usual exhibits that leave all of the art -- even the sold stuff -- on display until the end, "Small Stuff" can be viewed in its entirety only the day it opens. As the art is sold, it goes home with the buyer. Drawings, paintings, and silk-screen prints are just a few of the media on display from local, national, and even international artists. Pick up a whimsical gnome in ink and pencil on wood by Florida-based artist Sara Leigh or a giclée of an adorably edible marshmallow man by Kristin Tercek from New Jersey. Not only will you be checking off that shopping list but you'll be supporting working artists and giving unique gifts that your loved ones will cherish. "Small Stuff 5" opened on November 20, so to check out the items you missed, you'll have to visit tatescomics.com. But there's still plenty of art to see and buy until January 14.
