Thought Middle Was Awkward Enough?

Take the awkwardness of adolescence one step further by incorporating elements of academic insecurity and stage fright. The new play at Lake Worth Playhouse sure will. It's only one act and has been called the "funniest thing on seven consonants" by the Washington Post while Time magazine described the play as "an utterly charming look at one of the screwier manifestations of the American Dream." It's a comedy. It's a musical. It's a spelling bee.

The quirky drama The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee runs until February 5. Attend the Opening Night Gala on Friday for $28 to $32 and you get a complimentary glass of champagne, an appetizer and dessert spread from Callaro's Steak House, and, most important, you can participate in a spelling bee. RSVP for the gala by emailing theresa@lakeworthplayhouse.org. On nights other than the gala Friday, tickets cost $26 to $30, depending on the night. Evening performances are at 8 p.m. January 20, 21, 26, 27, and 28, and matinee shows are at 2 p.m. January 21, 22, 28, and 29 and February 4 and 5. Tickets can be purchased from the Lake Worth Playhouse Box Office at 713 Lake Ave. in Lake Worth by calling 561-586-6410. You can also purchase tickets from lakeworthplayhouse.org.
