While awareness about the benefits of a plant-based diet seems to be increasing, folks who have adopted this lifestyle are still sometimes looked at cockeyed by steadfast believers in the food pyramid of yore. Many people still would rather drink breast milk of another species, pop myriad prescriptions daily, and eventually have an artery from their leg sewn onto their heart than give up eating meat. Forks Over Knives is a 2011 film that seeks to shift people’s attitudes toward eating and nutrition so that they may feel better and have more enjoyable lives. The film focuses mainly on the careers and discoveries of two researchers working in different but related fields who both found that adopting a plant-based diet can reduce the risk of developing a vicious disease and even lead to the regression of the disease. Tonight, courtesy of the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, the film will be presented free to the public at Cinema Paradiso (503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale). The event is being put on in recognition of National MS Awareness and Education Month. Following the screening will be a cocktail and buffet reception and silent auction, with all proceeds going to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.
