A high school drum line is something to see. Straight-backed majorettes in crisp uniforms march in perfect time. Sure, they might not be the most popular kids in school — mocked mercilessly for their epaulets and tasseled boots — but on the field, they are a choreographed ballet of step and sound. While there is beauty in the precision of a disciplined marching band, at the Beat Cup Cafe (660 Linton Blvd., Ste. 110, Delray Beach) the beauty of Drum Line Night is in the chaos. Every Wednesday around 9:15 p.m., café owner Eric Perna leads a free-form symphony made up entirely of percussionists, from bongos to washboards to traditional drum kits, and you are invited to play. Whether you are a novice or an expert, whether you bring your own instrument or grab one off the wall, there’s a spot for you in this drum line. A core group of drummers that clearly knows what it’s doing is at the heart of this coordinated cacophony, but that should not deter anyone with functioning arms from joining in. There are craft beers on hand if you need a little liquid courage, coffee if you need some energy, and the creations of local artists covering the walls to inspire you.
