In the late '90s and the early '00s, Long Island act the Movielife seemed like the official band to like for tattooed tough dudes who just wanted a little melody sometimes. The group drew some threads from melodic hardcore but wove them mostly into melodic, sing-along pop-punk and played notoriously participatory shows for several years before finally breaking up in 2003. After a brief stint in Head Automatica, a dance-rock band made up mostly of hardcore alumni, singer Vinnie Caruana again started his own project with I Am the Avalanche. Though he's now based in Brooklyn, Caruana hasn't gotten all hipster artsy on anybody. Instead, his new five-piece continues to do what he did best before: punk-fueled power rock with big pop hooks.
