In 2005, the Surfrider Foundation brought the surf industry together to create "International Surfing Day," a time to celebrate the sport and to give back to the ocean and beaches around the world. What started as a small local happening has now grown into a global observance in 30 countries with more than 200 events, including beach cleanups, mangrove restorations, paddle-outs, and surf-inspired movie marathons. Even landlocked surf enthusiasts can partake in the international web-a-thon from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday via special interviews with pro surfers, musical performances, a bikini fashion show, and live feeds of events worldwide. Viewers can tune in to these websites for the International Surfing Day experience: intlsurfingday.com, surfrider.org, surf.transworld.net, and smelive.com. Locally, celebrate with fellow marine lovers from 7 to 10 p.m. at the surfing-themed Longboards Restaurant, 519 Clematis St. in West Palm Beach. There will be live music by Project X and South Side Dub, and while the event is technically free, a donation of $10 will not only help to restore and preserve the world's shorelines but will also get you appetizers and a complimentary beer. Call 561-833-4660, or visit sub-culture.org/long-boards/home-long-boards. Visit intlsurfingday.com.
