Save the Music, and Listen to Great Tunes Too

In these topsy-turvy times of deficits and budget cuts, school music budgets are often among the first to come under a city commission’s sharpened ax. It is in times like these that supporting groups such as Boca Raton's Swing & Jazz Preservation Society are critically important. This 10-year-old nonprofit organization fights to keep music education programs in schools and holds charity events to raise funds for purchasing instruments to donate to students. The group normally holds concerts during the winter months, but this Thursday, the charitable organization will stage a rare summer event, titled Musician’s Showcase. Event organizers have rounded up different styles of acts to satisfy just about every musical fancy. Drew Trucker, founder of the Tucker Academy for the Arts, will be on hand dispensing his virtuosic brand of modern jazz. Christopher Leary will be strumming his acoustic guitar ever so gracefully. Classic-rock band the Sheffield Brothers and indie-rock act Styles of Saturn will also take part, and a violinist, jazz keyboardist, and opera singer round out this eclectic bill. Entry is just $10 and comes with light appetizers. The family-friendly event gets under way at 6:30 p.m. and lasts until 9 p.m. The event takes place at Lakeside Terrace, located on the south side of Glades Road beside the Hilton Hotel, which is at 7880 Glades Road in Boca Raton.
