For better or worse, nuns have left an indelible mark on American theater, recurring in plays and especially musicals about as often as reformable gold diggers and penniless hoofers. You've probably seen more nuns on stages than you'll ever see in real life. So it takes originality to stand out among the habit-donning herd, and the Late Night Catechism series has accrued nearly 20 years' worth of record-busting praise. Since its 1993 premiere in the Windy City, it has become the longest-running play in Chicago history and the longest one-person comedy in off-Broadway history. In the show, described as equal parts standup comedy performance and catechism class, a character known simply as Sister explains Catholic theology to the unindoctrinated while interacting with the audience. It has inspired several spinoffs, including Late Night Catechism: Sister Mary Rolls the Dice, which premiered in Naples earlier this year to rave reviews. In it, Sister attempts to organize a casino night to fund a new roof for her convent. The production opens today for a two-day, three-show run at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, located at 201 SW Fifth Ave. in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $35.
