Be Your Own Buffy

In the age of Buffy Summers, Katniss Everdeen, Sydney Bristow, and Sarah Conner, it's no wonder women are finally getting top billing for action movies. But not all of us have moves like Angelina Jolie (circa Tomb Raider/Salt). Some of us still need basic knowledge of self-defense so that if we're ever caught in a scary situation, we can get ourselves out of it, and as safe as you may feel, according to a recent study done by the CDC, nearly one in five women in the U.S. has been sexually assaulted. So unless you were born with superslayer strength or are an arrow-shooting huntress, an international spy, or the badass mother of a kid set to defeat Skynet, odds are you could use some self-defense training of your own. Luckily the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach is offering free women's self-defense classes throughout August to help women learn how to avoid being in vulnerable situations and to teach them what to do if they're ever in them. Registration is free. Classes take place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the third-floor auditorium. The Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach is located at 411 Clematis St. in West Palm Beach. Call 561-868-7701, or visit wpbpl.com.
Tuesdays, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Starts: Aug. 14. Continues through Aug. 28, 2012
