Dinesh D'Souza's "2016: Obama's America": The Five Most Hilarious Lowlights

The movie of choice this week for people who hold the beliefs that A) America is the strongest, best-est country that God ever virgin-birthed and B) that that nation somehow just isn't strong enough to survive eight years of centrist Democratic leadership, Dinesh D'Souza's 2016: Obama's America actually does not touch on 2016 much at all.

Instead, it distills the anti-anticolonialist jeremiads of D'Souza's books—which already were to academic argument what fruit snacks are to fruit—into a eminently fast-forwardable travelogue through Nairobi, Kenya, Indonesia, and a magic-hour D.C., where D'Souza slumps about Droopy Dog–style in contemplation of the monuments and where flags are forever dancing on winds that we must presume are the world's most exceptional.

For what it's worth, his thesis concerns the reasons Obama returned a bust of Winston Churchill to the British Embassy early in his presidency. The only answer D'Souza entertains: that Obama is a Mau Mau anticolonial revolutionary driven to impress his dead, absentee father, a Kenyan who dared to write in 1965—two years after his homeland achieved its independence—that government regulation might sometimes be needed to rein in private industry. You might object, "But Obama has spent almost zero percent of his life with that father, and something like 75 percent of his life in the same private schools and Ivy League universities and institutions of power occupied by every other president of either party in recent American history." D'Souza's counter is to brandish Obama's memoir and proclaim, "Notice it says Dreams From My Father, not Dreams of My Father." Also: Bill Ayers! Jeremiah Wright! Edward Said, who once taught a class Obama took! NYU psychology professor Paul Vitz shows up to explain that the father who abandons a boy has a profound influence on the shaping of that boy, an argument that lays bare D'Souza's debased rules of evidence: the fact that Obama senior was never around to radicalize Obama junior only proves that he did radicalize Obama junior. That explains why junior later went on to fulfill the dream of all Kenyan revolutionaries of the 1960s: passing the health care plan Republicans came up with in the '90s.

More About

Now might be a prudent time to ask if, of all recent presidents, Obama is the one whose daddy issues have most endangered Americans.

Still, the film is a sleepy dud, a polemic that, like D'Souza himself, is at once both outrageous and deeply boring. Mostly well shot, it makes Michael Moore's films look cheap by comparison, but Moore at least dares some adversarial interviews, and he bothers to chart a connection between government policy, corporate decision making, and the lives of actual people.

The best D'Souza comes up with is to try to make Obama look like an asshole for not taking care of that half brother who lived for a while in a Nairobi hut. At first, this seems contradictory—if Obama were an anticolonial Marxist with Africa on the brain, certainly he would funnel some aid to his far-flung family, right? But D'Souza can fit any fact into his conspiracy. Turns out, George Obama—who appears in an interview—thinks Kenya would have been better off if it had let the white colonists run the place a few more years. The only possible conclusion, according to Mr. Dinesh D'Souza: Barack let George languish because George isn't down with the revolution.

The only true surprise here is D'Souza's haplessness in constructing both film and argument. Here's the five funniest things that somehow wound up on-screen:

5. After several baffling minutes of watching of D'Souza squint at poor people from his seat at a Jakarta coffeehouse, we're rewarded with a lingering shot of his khakied ass as he clambers onto a motorcycle.

4. Some actor actually got roped into playing a handsome young Dinesh D'Souza in re-created footage of an international-student mixer at Dartmouth. Other priceless re-creations: black hands digging the grave and crafting a cairn for Obama's father; an Obama figure, seen from behind and in pristine high-tops, approaching that grave, weeping, and drizzling dirt along the marker; young Dinesh, slinging on a pack and saying farewell to his family and homeland and the grandfather he calls"slightly anti-white."

3. The filmmakers' decision to have interviewees speak into cell phones when D'Souza was not himself present, and then to cut on occasion to D'Souza, on a grassy lawn, asking his questions, as if the production had money for two different film crews in two different places at the same time but not the money for Skype.

2. One killer jump cut that boils D'Souza's argument to its essentials: stock footage of skinny, loinclothed Third World laborers pickaxing a ditch followed immediately by Obama looking angry in the Oval Office.

1. D'Souza has made a career out of convincing white American conservatives that his personal history qualifies him to be the arbiter of which brown folks can and can't be trusted. Remember, he's the chap who declared American racism to be dead in 1995—something he was uniquely equipped to argue, considering his first experience of life here was those Dartmouth mixers. That claim is echoed in the only sequence here that achieves the inspired lunacy of a Glenn Beck.

Its so sad to see the country like this the founding fathers would roll in their graves. Want to know a real Lincoln quote "a house divided against itself cannot stand". I stand by my country and my constitution but its sad to see the banks and corrupt financial institutions winning. While we sit back and nambly pambly back and forth who is paying congress to have their laws implemented republicans and democrats both signed billions of dollars away to the banks. Please people look past these tiny disputes and look at what is really happening to this country All of our rights our gone. Our right to own property, our right to our inheritance and now our civil liberties are shrinking away. People say obama runs the media. WHY? He is a nobody. The banks are commiting the real tyranny. Gold is the currency of kings. Silver of Noblemen Debt is the currency of slaves. Nobody or excuse me 80 percent of the american people dont approve of washingtons job and why? Because in this so called constitutional republic no not democracy elect reps who are in agreement with our best intrest but why then are we unhappy. Because they are not voting for our best interest but for the checkbooks of those that sway the vote

From his name, I'd guess Dinesh D'Souza is from Goa, India, right? (I don't really care if it's not true; the GOP doesn't care that Obama was born in the US). The he must be some closet pedophile (Catholic), who secretly hates white people while at the same time licking their boots (Indian), and can't figure out why he like sausages so much (Portuguese). Yeah, sure, anyone can string together a bunch of racist stereotypes, and "psycho-analyze" a public personality. Doesn't make any of it true, though (well, I'm not quite so sure about the pedophile part; he's been far too keen to protect and defend catholic priests for my taste).

Now someone may have convinced you that sooaking the rich with higher taxes will make this problem go away. That's a fallacy. Look at California. That's where Obama will take the whole nation. Some people may think that a single individual who pays millions a year of what he legally earns in taxes to the government IS already paying his fair share. I'm sure you are not one of them.

denis24

@FSOnNJ California is in trouble because they CAN'T raise taxes, my friend, and because they have an idiotic balanced budget clause in their constitution that the GOP created. So it's conservative policies that doomed them, not Obama.

This reminds me of the movie "Birth of a Nation". Great timing when we are approaching an election with a black president. I guess this was meant to manipulate voters to the right. I hope americans are wise to look at the facts regarding both parties and vote with your head and not your heart. This is a great country and the last four years were not the fault of Obama. If we had elected officials who had put country first instead of party, much more could have been accomplished. The problem is, we need people in Congress who are willing to work together with one goal in mind and that is to make this country great again. We all need to do our fair share if you are rich then pay more taxes why should hard working people pay more when they make less? Please do not mention about job creators, they have not created that many jobs in the last 12 years after giving tax cuts to the rich. As Pres. Kennedy once said " asked not what the country can do for you, instead asked what can you do for your country"? People in the military have given their lives to keep us free and safe it"s about time rich people give something back instead on taking. No one is jealous of anyone being rich, we all need to play by the same rules.

kaimet
kaimet

@labelle1900 "about time rich people give something back"

Are you serious? I am an employee of a rich person. There are about 25 of us in his employ. I think what he gives us and what he pays in taxes and then what we pay in taxes is more than plenty.

cosmicaug
cosmicaug

@kaimet @labelle1900 You think of what he "gives" you? He *gives* you stuff? Are you joking? What kind of a servile mindset is that? He gives you nothing unless you think that yours is a make-work job. The funny thing is that even with this mindset which sees all power residing with your employer you probably can't even see the point of unions. Not to denigrate your wealthy benefactor, but none of this is being done out of the kindness of his heart (and, generally speaking, it shouldn't be). He didn't get up one morning thinking about how much money he saves in taxes thanks to our current taxation structure* and then decide to hire 25 people out of gratefulness for paying so little money to the IRS. His hiring of 25 people was a business decision. A 15% vs. 30% capital gains tax rate (for example) had very little or nothing to do with it. He determined that having 25 employees was necessary to make money in his business endeavor (that is, the additional income which these 25 employees provided outweighed the costs of hiring 25 employees). This is just how it works. You have helped create the profit from which your employer is benefiting. Since the 70's, the amount of profit which you have helped create has gone consistently up. Since the 70's, the amount of profit which your employer** has pocketed has consistently kept pace with this increased productivity while your own share of the profit*** has remained stagnant. Oh, and since the 70's your employer's effective taxation rates have been greatly lowered as well.
* And the judicious use of tax avoidance strategies by which his accountants presumably earn their keep
** I am generalizing here. Your employer may or may not fit this generalization but it is nevertheless valid in the general case.
*** Again, I am generalizing (I don't even know if you worked in the 70's). I am using you to refer to average workers in general.

denis24
denis24

@kaimet @labelle1900 Most rich people employ no one. Most rich people today own stock in companies (buying stock does nothing to create investment), and make money through speculation. Most jobs are created by small business people, the vast majority of which are not rich (they are far more often middle to upper-middle class, with revenues below 250K). Rich people don't create jobs; they more often destroy them, by shipping them to India.

That's good. Don't know why a silly film like this one would scare you so that you felt the need to insult an entire religious group and reveal your rather shallow understanding of politics and policy by calling Obama a "centrist" - - all in your first sentence.

Want to write something useful? Why don't you address where we are headed with the unemployment rate at 8.3% and debt over 16 trillion? Or how about writing about how the Obama campaign fails to even mention unemployment or the deficit, and instead focuses on the divicive policy of "taxing the rich," free birth control for female activists, union giveaways and gay marriage? Why not write about how we went from the greatest nation (one that guarantees your right to spew anti American viewpoints) to a dependency nation? Why not write about how GM, touted as the great Detroit turnaround that Obama allegedly gave us, has just shuttered its Volt plant AGAIN and how analysts have just downgraded its stock to a "sell." How about something on how the Chinese are picking off our bankrupt green energy company assets leaving the US taxpayer on the hook with Obama's loan guarantees (Do any of you know what Solyndra, Enerdel1, Beacon Hill and A123 Systems have in common?)?

Think it might be a good idea, while your busy bashing a President who has been out of power for 4 years, to look up once and a while to see where we are headed while Obama pursues his "centrist" policies? No. I'm sure the thought never occurred to you.

ckof
ckof

@FSOnNJ Its actually you who shows their ignorance by thinking Obama is anything but a centrist.

He is only "far left" when compared to the GOP who has moved so far to the right over the past 5-6 years that they are now barely visible and fading beneath the horizon as they continue their march toward their utopia: a bastardized marriage of Randian free markets with theocracy.

denis24
denis24

@FSOnNJ Obama is a centrist. You can dream all you want about China "picking off our bankrupt green energy company" (note the singular), but it doesn't make it so. The green sector is actually quite healthy, and GM is doing pretty well. Stop watching Fox News, and read some real business news (Bloomberg, maybe).

What China did "pick off" is our rare earth sector, which was sold wholesale to them under the Bush regime, and with their full complicity and encouragement (it's the Market, after all). That's a sector on which our entire military depends, and without which the very computer you wrote your pablum wouldn't exist. So if you want someone who is killing the country and selling it off to the Chinese, you should look at your conservative buddies.

Obviously Alan Sherstuhl doesn't have the insight to realize what a self-parody his own review is. He mocks Dinesh D'Souza for making ad-hominem attacks on Obama, by making ad-hominem attacks on Dinesh. In so doing , he merely adds fuel to the conservative ire. These intellectually bankrupt, lazy, derisive personal attacks have been the stock in trade of liberal pundits for decades. Think of Bill Maher, or Michael Moore, or Al Franken. Their entire repetoire consists of petty insults and deliberately inaccurate exaggerations of their opponents positions. Now that conservatives have lowered themselves to using the assault journalism techniques of the left, the prophets of the proletariat are increasingly sounding like four year olds retaliating in a contest of childish insults. No, YOU are a doody-head. Nuh-uh, you are! Life will be so much more pleasant when the conservatives are back in power, and the left-wing cretins return to their status as the irrelevant lunatic fringe.

Wow, looks like this could be another Chick a filet event that the liberal press shut down as fast as possible because it wasn't going well for them. Unfortunately it appears that 2016 is not only not going away, it is growing exponentially. So the next liberal step is to release the attack dogs.

This film is an instant classic Propaganda Film. It will live forever alongside BIRTH OF A NATION and TRIUMPH OF THE WILL. It is superb as a film distilling an instant in time and a particular political hysteria of that moment. The "Look at my hand" sequence will become a household fixture among students of propaganda films in film schools across the planet from now until the end of time, probably to live on in homage in future films much like the "Odessa Steps" of BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN.

So he found the movie silly, and others write that it didn't make a whole lot of sense. So I guess that proves there's a conspiracy.

Look, I understand being unhappy and wanting change. But why do you guys have to leap to crazy stuff like Obama's a muslim who hates America? It's so nonsensical it makes you all sound insane. The true force of darkness in this country is the willful and spiteful attacks on logic and facts. If this country falls to conspiracy theorists and people who believe the UN black helicopters are going to come in and steal their guns, it's going to be a very scary place to live.

Dave Chappelle had a skit called the Black Bush... Well we now have the real live Black Bush.

Great work in spending our money into oblivion, Bush and Obama, one in the same as far as economics.

Wolf359
Wolf359

@swiss422 "the willful and spiteful attacks on logic and facts" .....funny, this movie never says once that he's a muslim. It says he was born in Hawaii, it talks about his 20 years in a christian church and mostly quotes Obama's own words from his books. I am certain none of the liberals trashing this movie has seen it and won't... because they are so blinded by the light of his superior intellect, LOL.....we are all products of our upbringing....who raised us, who mentored us, who taught us. But, you cannot ignore or push aside the people who influenced President Obama as a conspiracy theory. The movie steers away from all the popular liberal machine inspired conspiracy theories.

So I have a question...if this turns out to be accurate...Obama wins a second term and he realizes his dream of bringing America into par with the rest of the world (bringing us down to their level economically, militarily, governmentally ), will you consider yourselves successful?

As the infamous Capt. Kirk once said, "I am laughing at the superior intellect".......

@Wolf359 @swiss422 You won't be able to give an actual citation for that "quote" from Lincoln because it's completely bogus. Wolf359
Wolf359

@thehersch @Wolf359 @swiss422 Your right, although every "quote" site on the internet gives him credit for it. What I posted was the readers digest version. Here is the actual quote:

""All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years. "At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide."

And by the way, that doesn't change what he meant.

My point is that the government should be as responsible as I have to be to maintain my household. The problem is that it can't. Everything the government does, it does poorly and wastes tons of money.....and our President wants to make it bigger and just prints more money to do it. It is a recipe for disaster and you can tax the 1% at 99% tax rate and it still won't put a dent in this country's debt. At some point, some has have the cojones to say enough! "our country hasn't been more divided since Vietnam or even the civil war. Man, what a list of accomplishments!"

Since the racists, bigots, and hate-mongers on the RIGHT were talking up "secession" and "civil war" even before Obama won the last election, and have kicked their insurrectionist talk into high gear since his inauguration, you might want to slap yourself awake long enough to point your shaky little finger at the real culprits, there, Jethro.

"You may want the country to be run like California, which is going bankrupt like many of it's cities, but I do not."

More typical bulls*** right-wing debating tactics.

"I guess we will see in November who was right."

Little man, the winner of an election has nothing to do with who was RIGHT, it just means one side was better at swaying the voters. Surely to God, you people comprehend THAT much

"The difference between you and I are, that I was able to state my opinions respectfully, while you had to resort to petty name calling."

No, the difference is that I don't rely on spreading lies and malicious rumors when stating my opinions. As for your last "point", there, you guys talk a lot about the debt, but I don't see you offering any suggestions that will actually, y'know, DO ANYTHING about it without basically shutting down the entire government. A lot of wishful thinking and fairytales, but, like every other issue, nothing of any real substance.

@badbranchcharlie I am glad we had this little discussion. Kind of reminds me of the discussions I have with my brother. He too thinks Obama is a genius among geniuses. Totally dismissing the fact that he has spent us into oblivion (along with Bush) with absolutely no plan other than to expand our already bloated government. All Romney has to do is stay on point and ask exactly what Reagan did, "are you better off than you were 4 years ago?"

While there are a few that are doing better, the vast majority are not. I am glad that this President has made your life so much better that you are voting for him again. Me on the other hand have a house worth 1/2 of what it was, my retirement is gone (as well as most of my liberal parents retirement), I am making about 2/3 of what I was, oh and my country is in twice the debt it was. The country is also in class and race wars thanks to your imperious leader and our country hasn't been more divided since Vietnam or even the civil war. Man, what a list of accomplishments!

You may want the country to be run like California, which is going bankrupt like many of it's cities, but I do not. I guess we will see in November who was right. The difference between you and I are, that I was able to state my opinions respectfully, while you had to resort to petty name calling. Here is something I just saw that you should think about before you vote:

"The U.S. government now owes $11.1 trillion to others -- or $11,065,934,893,561.99" and the total debt is just under 16 trillion. Probably by the time you read this, it will be over 16 trillion.

@Wolf359 >>That was good advice, why did you discard it?

"I didn't, my dad is so liberal, he makes you look conservative...and he and I have these discussions all the time. So I know both side intimately."

Obviously, you need to re-evaluate your "knowledge".

"and that there are winners and losers"

>>Yeah, and since the GOP lost the last presidential election, they've done everything they could do to make sure that this administration failed, even if the country fails in the process.

"Actually, the president had a 'straight flush' for the first 2 years and did nothing with it. He and you need to stop pointing fingers and take some responsibility...."

It's amazing that I have to keep pointing this out to people who claim to be "knowlegeable", but it takes more than a simple majority to have what you call a "straight flush". It requires a 60% majority to stop a filibuster, and even then, it takes time. The minority party can pretty easily prevent a bill from passing - but of course, you know that.

"I am pretty sure Obama volunteered for the job, know the situation...which means he can't keep blaming someone else."

Oh, he can't blame someone else for their own actions? Good to know (as if I didn't already) that you guys are in favor of "personal responsibility" only when it isn't YOURS...

>>2) The old "welfare leech" slur is old, boyo. And it takes a special kind of willfully ignorant, factually handicapped proselytizer whose well aware their entir argument is specious to fall back on it. Fail.

"Wrong again....the lib's in this country want people dependent on the government

Gone straight from misdirection and innuendo to bald-faced lies, I see. Good, that saves us time. I knew you'd get there sooner or later.

"oh and I have not once 'proselytized'.....It is your right to believe in nothing and it is my right to believe in God...and I have never pushed my beliefs on anyone...not even my atheist parents and brother..."

Not very acquainted with the nuances of the English language, are you?

>>>"They also taught me that nothing is solved by calling people names"

>>Funny how the right wing thinks of that NOW, after they've started getting some of their own medicine back. Tsk, tsk.

"Hmmm...I have yet to see any posts from conservatives calling people 'willfully ignorant, factually handicapped and F*** you, @$$hole and naturally ignorant, or just being deliberately stupid'"

Sorry, I don't feel obligated to simply parrot back the same exact slurs that people use toward me and mine.

>>>"....it only causes further division...which is I guess what this President wants... because he surely isn't trying to unite the country...only a true leader would be able to do that!"

>>Are you naturally ignorant, or just being deliberately stupid?

"Actually, if you check your history books, every President from Reagan forward (including Clinton) with the exception of Obama....who wouldn't even speak to the other side during his 1st 2 years, was able to bring both sides of the aisle together. Obama has driven a wedge in this country that may never be brought back together.....unless we get rid of him this election."

Given that sentence, I'm afraid my question seems even more appropriate...

@Wolf359 Something you right-wingers apparently need to learn the hard way, since your mommies and daddies didn't have the guts to teach you: The 1st Amendment doesn't give you any right to run your mouth without being called on it. There's some truth for you, now deal with it.

gee, no comments and an audience of 793. Well.....you guys should be thinking about good places to hide. With all the threats coming out of the media and hollywood you would think it would be the other way around, but somehow i'm thinking the left is in for a surprise they are not quite prepared for. I am a plain warner. You should temper your remarks and be more circumspect regarding possible outcomes. Not that i think you will, but telling you makes it so much easier.

"You should temper your remarks"If the left is in for a surprise in Nov. that they are not prepared for, do comments like "temper your remarks" mean that somehow if Romney wins the election, people with opposing views may face prosecution or persecution?

@telecastr2004 @mealeonann I kind of read it to say that failure to temper current remarks would only make them appear all the more foolish down the road. The frequent leaps to hysterical conclusions are my least favorite part of engaging with libs.

@Who-is-John-Galt Whitewash it all you want, the fool's words are right there for anyone to read. There was no "leaping" to conclusions, all it took was a tiny step.

@yrwehere Good question. See, these imbeciles think they're the only ones who "got the difference".
