When's the last time you spotted professional cheerleaders, a pack of skydivers, and buff military folks in their swim gear? Not lately, eh? This three-day, weekendlong event offers a chance to rub elbows with these fine people. The occasion, "Stars, Stripes and Sun," is in honor of the bravehearted who have served in the American military. While they are off in foreign lands assigned to serious duties, we South Floridians sit back and do what we do best: revel. This weekend in recognition of their hard work, the Veterans Services of America, a West Palm Beach-based organization that assists with housing homeless veterans, has organized three days packed with activities.
Kicking off the festivities at 5 p.m. Friday at Huizenga Plaza, join the outdoor party, "Dolphins Day," which features appearances by eye-candy gals the Dolphins cheerleaders as a thrilling skydiving demonstration by the U.S. Army Golden Knights will go down... er, up in the air.
Saturday night, stroll A1A just south of Las Olas Boulevard at Fort Lauderdale Beach for a little bash from 7 to 11 p.m. featuring a variety of entertainment. Cocktails will abound.
The weekend caps off with a sexy pool party that doubles as a military fundraiser at Exit 66 from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Sizzle poolside under the sun with those buff and well-toned military personnel over barbecue. A $10 donation to the Veterans Services of America at this pool party offers attendees free draft beer and entry to the raffle. Prizes will include a surfboard, paddleboard, wakeboard, skydiving trip, and helicopter ride, to name a few. Don't forget to offer those bravehearted folks a drink or two, as though America depends on it.
Exit 66 is located at 219 S. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. Pool-party cost is a $10 donation; no cover for military personnel. Call 954-765-4466, or visit sunny.org/military.com.
