More About

Strip malls could, in some respects, qualify as the unofficial state symbol of Florida. That doesn't mean history nerds/heroes -- like the Broward Trust for Historic Preservation -- don't make a strong case for holding onto the region's more engaging architecture. The group will host "Pints for Preservation" on Thursday at Maguire's Hill 16 to rally community support for Broward County's various at-risk historical buildings and landmarks. One example to consider: The 1974 egret-themed tile mosaic on the Cumberland Building in Fort Lauderdale that activists rallied to save, to no avail (the crumbling art piece was demolished last month). The group will use tonight's event to raise awareness of other endangered historical sites in Broward County in the hopes of preventing their extinction. Drink a pint or two of beer and nosh on light appetizers while you learn about how to get involved in the cause. "Pints for Preservation" is 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Pay $35 and get food and drinks, plus an annual membership to the Broward Trust for Historic Preservation. Maguire's Hill 16 is located at 535 N. Andrews Ave. in Fort Lauderdale. Call 781-710-7123, or visit Facebook.com/BrowardTrustForHistoricPreservation.
Thu., Sept. 20, 6-8 p.m., 2012
