Proving Hitch Wrong

Back in 2007, polemicist Christopher Hitchens wrote one of his most controversial articles ever, and that's saying something. In a Vanity Fair screed titled "Why Women Aren't Funny," he argued that it was simply not in women's nature to be funny, because unlike men, they don't need humor to lure the opposite sex. Among the nonsense from the writer was that "most [female comedians], when you come to review the situation, are hefty or dykey or Jewish, or some combo of the three." Like any other comedy mecca (OK, submecca), South Florida has its share of talented, multifaceted, estrogen-carrying comedians who continue to prove this abrasive notion wrong, and eight of them will share a stage on Saturday for the Glamorous Girls of Comedy at the Fort Lauderdale Comedy Club. LuLu Braha, Michelle Solomon, Cindy Banks, Adrienne Airhart, Amy Tinoco, Pam Bruno, Theresa Carissimi, and Anna Collins will perform at this fundraiser for Gilda's Club, a cancer support organization. Tickets cost $15, and the show begins at 8 p.m. The club is located at 840 E. Oakland Park Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. Call 954-530-2069, or visit fortlauderdalecomedyclub.com.
Sat., Nov. 17, 8 p.m., 2012
