Trumpeter, composer, and all-around musical savant Willie Colón is among the most respected and revered salseros in history. His legendary career spans nearly five decades, and he's collaborated with some of the most influential artists of all time, including Celia Cruz, Rubén Blades, and Héctor LaVoe. In fact, Colón helped LaVoe spread salsa to the masses when the two men began collaborating in the mid-1970s. However, if you caught El Cantante, LaVoe's biopic starring Marc Anthony, you probably didn't pick up on that. "The movie El Cantante was a missed opportunity," Colón said in a 2010 interview with Herald de Paris. "LaVoe fans were hungry for a film that would go into their idol's life in depth and shine some light on who he really was. It was also an opportunity to show the rest of the world what we're about... Instead, we got a two-dimensional B-movie about another Latino junkie." LaVoe died in 1993 from AIDS-related complications, but his legacy's safe with Colón.
