Ode In The Sunshine State

There are some people — the sorely misinformed — who bemoan the general lack of culture and cultural events in South Florida. Where is the literature? Where is the art? The truth is, our sweltering tropical paradise is teeming with creative people who paint, sketch, sculpt, and write. We have our famous novelists, to be sure, but we also have our share of poets. You can see this for yourself during the ninth-annual Palm Beach Poetry Festival. The festival gives the community a chance to read and hear the words of real-life, living poets, and it gives aspiring poets a chance to share their art — though it is past the deadline to enter for this year, there’s always next year. There will be poetry readings, educational lectures, and workshops. The festival takes place over six days, from this Monday through Saturday, January 26, at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts. You can purchase tickets to individual events for $15 for general admission, $12 for seniors, or $10 for students. Call 561-868-2063, email news@palmbeachpoetryfestival.org, or visit palmbeachpoetryfestival.org.
