Downtown Grows Green

When most people hear the term urban growth, they probably picture a creeping sprawl of zero-lot-line houses and shopping plazas stealing all the greenery. But the organizers of Grow Downtown are looking to promote a different kind of urban growth. They are seeking to proliferate gardens — green spaces that soothe the soul and feed the body. Flagler Garden and Whole Foods Market have partnered to host this green-market event Sunday to celebrate Earth Month and debut future plans for Flagler Garden. If you purchase sangria from Whole Foods Market, the green grocer will match all proceeds from its sales and make a donation to the garden. There will be plenty of other local green vendors selling their wares, along with live music. If you’ve been considering staking out a plot of your own, now is your chance, because Flagler Garden will raffle off one plot, a $500 value that guarantees a spot for “Founding Gardeners” in their first year. Typically, Founding Gardener sponsorship costs $500 and helps fund construction. After the first year, plots will lease for about $85 per year. Grow Downtown takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Flagler Garden, located at 441 NE Third Ave. in Fort Lauderdale. Admission is free, but donations to the garden are greatly appreciated.
