Between 1914 and 1918, a million horses were sent overseas to help with the war effort. As they carried rations and ammunition to the front line and brought the wounded back on stretchers, they were caught in mustard gas attacks and barbed wire and left to die in no man’s land. Their untold story is captured through one horse’s journey in the five-time Tony Award-winning play War Horse, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. The play, adapted by Nick Stafford from Michael Morpurgo’s book and directed by Bijan Sheibani, is the story of young Albert and his beloved horse, Joey, who has been enlisted to fight for the English in WWI. Joey, caught in enemy crossfire, ends up serving both the English and German sides before the war’s end. Albert, who desperately misses his horse, is not old enough to enlist in the war but embarks on a treacherous journey to bring home his best friend. Be moved by the play’s music and songs, and sit in awe as life-sized horses, created by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, breathe, gallop, and charge across the stage. Don’t miss this remarkable tale of courage, loyalty, and friendship Tuesday through May 19 at the Au Rene Theater, located at 201 SW Fifth Ave. in Fort Lauderdale. Performances are Tuesday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m. Matinee performances are Saturdays, Sundays, and Wednesday, May 15, at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $39.50 to $79.50.
