Living in the land of temptation that is South Florida, there are few places one can go where everyone is sober (and wants to be). But this Saturday, recovering addicts and the people who love them will gather at Tradewinds Park for the second-annual Heroes in Recovery 6K Run/Walk. The Heroes in Recovery group is organized by Foundations Recovery Network, which specializes in substance abuse and mental health treatment. The group is led by former addicts and their family members and follows a mission to shake stigmas surrounding drug abuse and mental health. The group holds 6K races across the U.S.; proceeds from the Coconut Creek event will benefit the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center in Pembroke Pines. Saturday's race spans 6 kilometers (for us Americans, that's 3.728 miles). Registration is $35 before May 3. Otherwise, it's $40 the day of the race. Registration and packet pickup start at 6 a.m., and the race starts at 7 sharp. The awards ceremony begins at 9 a.m., with prizes going to the top three male and female overall winners and top three men and women in each age group, as well as teams and spectators. All participants get a medal, shirt, raffle entry, and postrace nutrition. There will be no celebratory mimosas or bloody marys; the only binge drinking here will involve Gatorade and water. Tradewinds Park is located at 3600 W. Sample Road in Coconut Creek. Visit heroesinrecovery.com, or call 888-312-4220.
