Running and tigers and running, oh my! The Palm Beach Zoo has something special on its hands with the second-annual Save the Tiger 5k, and you can be a part of it. The purpose of this run is to raise funds that will support the zoo’s crucially important Malayan tiger exhibit. Why so important? It’s estimated that only 300 Malayan tigers are left in the wild, and the Palm Beach Zoo successfully bred three male cubs three years ago. Those cubs have moved on to the Jacksonville Zoo, and the staff is hoping that the mother, Berapi, will have another litter this summer.
And while the cause is reason enough to become involved, the Palm Beach Zoo has taken the extra environmental step and is making the Save the Tiger 5k its first green-certified run. The quest for sustainability includes pushing everyone to register online to cut down on paper and taking composting and recycling seriously before, during, and after the race. While you save the tigers, you also get to save the planet. This run doesn’t just raise funds for an important cause; it brings much-needed resources to an important part of our animal culture, and you can help the tigers avoid extinction. It’s the circle of life.
