Slam poetry is a serious art form, and improv comedy is anything but. That doesn't mean the two aren't perfectly paired for an evening of fun.
It's the best of both worlds with SLAMPROV: A Night of Slam Poetry and Improv, on Saturday at the Showtime Performing Arts Theatre (503 SE Mizner Blvd., Boca Raton). What brings these two beasts together? The Sick Puppies comedy troupe has teamed with the Dada's National Slam Poetry crew as the latter entertains as a means to raise funds for its trip to the National Slam Poetry competition in Oakland, California. So far, the Dada has earned about $1,200 toward its $2,500 goal. It's the only Florida team competing, so show your pride, support the effort, and come out for thought-provoking performance and laughter.
Four poets will take the stage and awe you with their impassioned prose. Between each performance, the Sick Puppies will improvise a skit inspired by the piece you just heard. Both these organizations have been at their craft for years, so expect nothing but the highest-quality, artful LOLs.
The show begins at 8 p.m., and tickets cost $15. Call 305-905-0192, or visit showtimeboca.com.
