The feminist in all of us no longer needs to be hidden; any Beyoncé fan knows that as a fact. We are in an age of celebrating women who have accomplished great feats as opposed to burying it in the headlines. But it wasn't always this way. Florida-based author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings wrote the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Yearling and thankfully is getting the credit she deserves. Her story is told in the based-on-a-true-story tale Cross Creek. The movie depicts the strong, independent woman creating a life of her own and writing along the way. You know how to know this movie is good? Rip Torn and Alfre Woodard are in it. We realize, you might need some more encouragement than just a stellar cast. How does supporting a good cause sound? The $5 donation goes directly to the Fort Lauderdale Woman's Club, whose mission is to "engage the women of Fort Lauderdale as volunteers who make a recognizable difference in addressing civic, educational, cultural and humanitarian needs in our community and beyond." Oh, and there's free popcorn! Doors open at 7 p.m. Friday, and the movie starts at 7:30. The Fort Lauderdale Woman's Club is located at 20 S. Andrews Ave. Call 954-815-3439, or visit fortlauderdalewomansclub.com.
