Dancehall Diplomats

Chip away at any lame-ass party scene in the world, and you will find an infinitely more hip underground. Whenever that scene includes competitive dancehall reggae, you will hear talk of Black Chiney.

Miami-based mixologist Supa Dups, who always looks tough as hell, put out a reggae/hip-hop CD under that name in 1999, and it took off. Then he teamed up with another half-black, half-Chinese Jamaican -- D.C. standout Bobby Chin, who still had something to prove after his former gig, Super Power Earthquake Sound, unexpectedly went under. Together, they hit the dancehall scene hard in 2001 and cemented their status in Jamaica. The following summer they won a DJ contest called Fully Loaded, and pissed off the master of the reigning sound, Tony Matterhorn. In November 2002, Matterhorn decided to put Black Chiney in its place at a Miami party called Plus, but BC smacked him down. A rematch yielded a tie.

In 2003, the still-nascent group started touring in the United States, the Caribbean islands, Central and South America, and some European countries. Black Chiney has dropped album after album of mixes and remixes, including Enter the Dragon, Return of the Dragon, Revenge of the Dragon, and finally, The Last Dragon. Their latest release, Black Chiney 8.1: Supa Chiney, features a bombing 95 tracks, including skits, prank phone calls, and an unauthorized appearance by Lenny Kravitz.

Now six members strong, Black Chiney brings the beats and a positive message. On its website,, the group proclaims, "To mix as people we are all one, just like how Black Chiney mix and remixes music, to be a mixed person can be a beautiful thing. One love no matter what color, religion, or race you are. 'Let music set you free. '" -- Courtney Hambright
