MasterMind Awards — Meet the Judges
Michelle Weinberg wears many hats: working artist, gallery director, arts educator — and now, judge for the MasterMind Awards, a contest founded by New Times and sponsored by the Amplitude Academy of Musical Arts, a new music school. "Always artist first," Weinberg emphasizes. The native New Yorker, who won a 2008 South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship for Visual & Media Artists, came to South Florida on another fellowship more than a decade ago and stayed when it ran out three years later. Weinberg, who holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City and an MFA from Philadelphia's Tyler School of Art, has been a visiting artist and instructor at the University of South Florida, Florida Atlantic University, and the Miami International University of Art & Design, among others, and she has worked at Florida International University's Wolfsonian Museum. Now she maintains a home and studio in Miami and works as creative director of Fort Lauderdale's Girls' Club, an alternative gallery space where she's preparing for the upcoming opening of "Set to Manual," an exhibition emphasizing the handmade. Of the MasterMind Awards, she says: "Anything that recognizes the creative world is good. I love it that a newspaper is interested in doing something like this." As a judge, she says she'll be "just looking for what's good. You're always surprised with originality, dedication, something visionary."
