When Sarah Jones was writing her one-woman show Bridge and Tunnel, she made the New York City subway line something like her mobile study hall. There, she analyzed the characters who traveled into Manhattan from the largely ethically diverse immigrant communities of the surrounding outer burroughs, often nicknamed (both lovingly and despairingly) the “bridge and tunnel” crowd. While the script could have easily fallen into the parody territory of the likes of Coming to America, Jones’ interpretations (playing everyone from a Pakistani accountant to a Chinese mother adjusting to her daughter’s alternative lifestyle) served as an adoring tribute that had even Meryl Streep saying everyone should know Sarah Jones. Although the play closed on Broadway in 2006, performances continue elsewhere, including Thursday’s stay at the Women’s Theatre Project at Sixth Star Studios (505 NW First Ave., Fort Lauderdale) starring Karen Stephens.
