The Cure For What Ails Ya

What’s the struggling artist to do? You’re full of passion for their work but you can’t seem to get anyone in the art world to take notice. Street-corner caricatures? Magazine contests? Going back to stripping, even though you promised yourself you never would again? No, no, and double no. The answer: You say the hell with the exclusivity of the art world, harness your creativity and launch something of your own. That’s what local DJ and aspiring gallery curator Nico Cassanetti is doing with her new one-night show “Art Rx,” going down this Friday at The Lounge (517 Clematis St., West Palm Beach).

What’s the show all about? Cassanetti explains it like this: “I see it as a panacea for the lack of opportunity local artists have in getting themselves out into the larger picture.” The show is set to hip enthusiasts to 17 artists, most of whom are local and new, but some, like Palm Beach’s Michael Korber and experimental artist U.N.O., who are already on the rise. For Cassanetti, bringing undiscovered art to the public is something close to home. “My parents had a gallery in SoHo, so art publishing has been in my family for over 50 years,” she says. And while she admits the indie art scene in South Florida is a tougher nut to crack than New York, she’s been overwhelmed by the amount of response the show has received so far – there’s even plans to do another show at Respectables in the near future. For now, "Art Rx" is free from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. tonight, with catering from Whole Foods, live jazz from Drew Tucker until 10 p.m., and $6 martinis all night.
