Is there a better way to spend your Saturday than with a bunch of geeks dressed head to toe in painfully-detailed costumes surrounded by sci-fi,
Luckily, I got my chance to do just that at the first-annual Wizard World Comic Con in Fort Lauderdale. Unfortunately, I did not meet with William Shatner, but I did meet with Spock, Pikachu, and a few different varieties of Sailor Moon.
Besides Shatner, guests included Sean Astin, of Goonies and Rudy fame, James Marsters, who played Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Dennis Rodman, who plays a weird-ass dude in real life.
Of course, the real superstars are the ones who work weeks, sometimes even months on complicated get-ups that bring your favorite fantasy characters to life. Shout out the dude walking around in 75-pound armor all day, as well as everyone who somehow kept their giant swords sheathed, despite our constant requests to whip it out.
While some in attendance thought the festivities were rather small in scale, others figured it was a pretty good showing for the con’s first time. I, on the other hand, won a free t-shirt, morphed into a Na?vi from Avatar, and got a super cute Captain Toad (via Super Mario Galaxy 2) keychain, which is to say, I had a super successful con.
