So often, diseases and the attempts to cure them are framed in military terms. We battle diabetes. We survive cancer. We fight HIV. And then many societal problems are framed as diseases. We have social ills. So we suppose it isn’t too much of a metaphorical crime to wage a war against the social ailment of hunger. You can be on the front lines of this battle against empty bellies by working up an appetite at Feeding South Florida’s second-annual March for Hunger 5k Walk/Run along Hollywood Beach and the Broadwalk on Saturday from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Take arms against a sea of starvation. Lay siege to famine. Assume battle formations; covertly infiltrate and assassinate hunger pains like a Taliban leader watching porn in a creepy bunker. (Are these military metaphors doing anything for you?) Every dollar raised means seven pounds of food and grocery items for Broward and Palm Beach residents in need. Registration is $25 in advance at splitsecondtiming.com or $35 the day of the race. Check-in is at Hollywood Beach Bandshell, at Johnson Street and the Broadwalk. For more information about the walk and Feeding South Florida (formerly Daily Bread Food Bank), visit feedingsouthflorida.org, or call 954-518-1818.
