A Big Hunk o' Elvis
In his final days, Elvis Presley, arguably one of the greatest pop-culture figures of all time, was strung out on a potent mix of pharmaceuticals and fried peanut butter and bacon sandwiches. Not exactly how fans of "The King" want to remember their rock god. Elvis acolytes can revisit happier times Sunday at the Big Elvis Show. Pete "Big Elvis" Vallee brings his long-running Las Vegas tribute act to the Florida casino scene at Seminole Coconut Creek Casino. As the name implies, Vallee's considerable carriage harkens to Presley's heftier later years, but his size doesn't diminish his ability to rock the stage with an array of hits from Presley's catalog as well as other gospel and country tunes. In recent years, the renowned impersonator, whom Details magazine noted has a "rich baritone similar to Presley's," has even shed some weight, giving him a bit more pep in his step. After the tribute wraps, local Elvis wannabes are welcome to participate in a look-alike contest with $1,500 in prizes to share. The show is 2 p.m. Sunday in the Pavilion at Seminole Coconut Creek Casino, located at 5555 NW 40th St. in Coconut Creek. Tickets cost $10, plus service fees.
