Like cannoli and organized crime, Italian families take loyalty seriously. Walk out on a date with little Susie Scarpelli and chances are you won't be walking much longer. And when it comes to intrafamily relations, the standards are even higher, as depicted through a comedic (and Mafia-free) vantage in Over the River and Through the Woods at Broward's Stage Door Theater. The off-Broadway play is written by Joe DiPietro, best-known for Memphis and I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change. In Over the River, leading man Nick lives in New Jersey just blocks from all four of his grandparents. His parents fly off to Florida to enjoy retirement, leaving Nick to fend for himself at the family's weekly Sunday dinners. Once Nick gets a primo job offer and tries to fly off like his parents, the hilarity ensues. Over the River and Through the Woods runs through May 11 at Broward's Stage Door Theater, with performances on Wednesdays and Sundays at 2 p.m., Fridays at 8 p.m., and Saturdays at 2 and 8 p.m. Tickets cost $38.
