A League of Their Own
Has competitive gaming finally become a sport unto itself? Lets look at the facts: The World Series of Video Games is now being broadcast on CBS Sports; Frag has entered Websters Dictionary as slang for killing your opponent in Quake; and the competition to find the best Madden NFL gamer, taking place each year in Times Square, nets one lucky player $100,000. And people complain about real athletes being overpaid.
Still, theres an undeniable level of skill that accompanies slipping by your opponents D with a perfectly executed 360-spin/juke combo. Video football is not easy, folks. And if youve got the kind of stamina to endure hours at the business end of a controller, you may be in contention for the top prize at this years Madden League at Duffys Sports Bar (21212 St. Andrews Blvd., Boca Raton). The 10-week league will determine whos the best Madden player in town, with the grand prize winner picking up a ticket for a two-day cruise. Games will be held each Monday on one of Duffys big-screen HDTVs, but players can register at the bar this Saturday night, or by calling 561-629-6020. Entry costs $30 per person.
