Ace of Bass Draws Inside Straight
How does a musician remain visible let alone relevant on-stage with guitar virtuoso Pat Metheny? Ask Christian McBride. The Philly-born bassist routinely elicits awe while playing in Methenys trio, pulling rich, resonant tones from his upright or providing growling, slippery solos on his electric ax. McBride, 38, established himself as a versatile sideman with jazz greats Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Watson, and Benny Golson. But hes also led his own groups, the most recent of which, Inside Straight, contains more than one ace: saxophonist Steve Wilson, pianist Peter Martin, drummer Carl Allen, and newcomer Warren Wolf Jr. on vibes. The acoustic quintets 2009 recording Kind of Brown namechecks one of McBrides greatest bass influences, Ray Brown, and contains elegant yet driving straight-ahead jazz masterfully played. The quintet performs at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Miniaci Performing Arts Center (Nova Southeastern Campus), 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr. Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $40.
