Adventurers Only, Please
Are you the outdoors type? You know, the kind of person who loves the smell of charcoal, yearns for the buzz of mosquitoes nipping at your legs, and fancies dressing in flannel? Then you might be interested in the 2003 Toyota Tundra Adventure Racing Series, which is coming to Oleta River State Park (3400 NE 163rd St., North Miami) September 27 and 28. So what can a participating Paul Bunyan wannabe expect? Contestants, who may enter solo or as members of two- or three-person teams, must get past a number of hurdles. Races include mountain biking, kayaking, and cross-country trail running. A compass orientation test, zip line maneuvering, rope climbing, and a strength competition round out the weekend's activities.
There are a few rules you should know. You must be 16 years old as a team member and 18 if you want to enter solo. You need to bring your own bike; kayaks and paddles will be provided. Registration is $65 for solos, $130 for two-person teams, and $195 for three-member squads. For participating, you'll get a racing jersey, a fit kit full of cool outdoor stuff, and admission to the post-race BBQ with live entertainment. The top three finishers in each division earn prizes. Anyone for Tennis?
Wouldn't that be nice?
You love tennis but just can't find any playing partners? Well, go without serves and volleys no longer! The City of Fort Lauderdale is offering Friday-night "Drop In Tennis" at the Jimmy Evert Tennis Center (701 NE 12th Ave., Fort Lauderdale) for all those vagabond fuzzy-ball worshipers looking for some decent competition and old-fashioned fun.
So break out your Wimbledon threads, dust off those rackets, and tighten up your strings. While you're at it, you might also want to practice your pickup lines -- did I mention this is co-ed tennis? Drop In, which starts at 7 p.m., is very informal and open to any and all skill levels. Call 954-828-5378. -- Russ Evans
