Art and Egg

The Armory Art Center is not just a gallery; it’s an artists’ retreat, a sort of West Point for the creative. Last year, two world-renowned artists, Suzanne Scherer and Pavel Ouporov, joined Armory as the “2-D Artists in Residence” and taught a class on painting with egg tempera — one of the oldest methods in art and not to be confused with tempura, a Japanese style of frying. The couple have permanent woks — er, make that works — at MOMA and the Library of Congress. Their residency just ended at Armory, and now they and four other artists are showing the public what they — and their students — have been cooking up during their stay.

There are two exhibits: “The 2010-2011 Artists in Residence Exhibition” and the “Armory Annual Student Show.” They are both open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday. The resident artists’ gallery runs through May 13 and the student show through May 3 at the Armory Art Center (1700 Parker Ave., West Palm Beach). Admission is free. Call 561-832-1776, or visit
Mondays-Saturdays. Starts: April 22. Continues through May 13, 2011
