Forget that imported artsy party in Miami called Art Basel, which is in December. Friday to Sunday, almost every major South Florida arts institution will be involved in the Wynwood Art Fair. Expect to encounter a giant cartoon balloon procession led by local chuckleheads Friends With You, guaranteed to lift the spirits with their inimitable brand of merriment. Bursting at the seams with contemporary art along NW Sixth Avenue, between 23rd and 29th streets, the Wynwood Art Fair will also boast ethnic-food vendors to tickle the palate, graffiti painters, wandering performers, and a hodgepodge of site-specific installations to delight the eyes. Fairgoers young and young-at-heart can expect both local and national artists creating interactive and performance-based works while engaging alongside as participants in the creative process themselves. Fair hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday to Sunday. Tickets cost $10, children under 10 get in free, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The unprecedented art event benefits the Sundari Foundation, operating the Lotus House Women's Shelter, dedicated to helping women and children get back on their feet. Visit wynwoodartfair.org.
